About the 1605 Living History Society

Acting out the plot We are a Living History group who are available for school visits and public events in order to bring 'hands on' educational workshops to both children and adults alike.

Our aim is to promote interest in the 1605 Gunpowder plot and Renaissance period, and by doing so we can use the historical and religious background to the plot to promote better understanding and tolerance between all groups of citizens, regardless of age, ethnic origin, ability or belief, and help youngsters to recognise the value of our many differences.

Apothecary We wish to present a picture of how people lived, worked, fought and played during this period, and by presenting the historical details of the Gunpowder Plot we will also demonstrate its close, but generally unpublicised, connections with Coventry and Warwickshire.

Our work is in conjunction with local authorities, voluntary and educational groups in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. (See this map for a guide to the area we cover.)

Did you know...

...that the main plot party were prepared to kidnap Princess Elizabeth at Coombe Abbey?

And it was a planned 'Hunting Party' from Dunchurch, which took place on Dunsmore Heath just a few miles from Coombe Abbey, ready to capture the 'new' Queen.

Once Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder had killed the king with the 'blow' to Parliament, and destroyed the Palace of Westminster along with most of the country’s leaders...

...Coventry and Warwickshire would probably have been the centre of a much earlier English Civil War.

Gunpowder, Treason & Plot,
It is Warwickshire and Coventry which are forgot!
